A US actor who starred in the TV series Boston Legal has been killed in a car crash.

Justin Mentell, 27, was driving along a highway in the northern state of Wisconsin when his 4WD plunged down an embankment and hit two trees, the Associated Press reports.

Police said the actor was not wearing a seatbelt when the accident happened on Monday morning local time.

Mendell played the attorney Garrett Wells on Boston Legal from 2005 to 2006 and also appeared in the Disney movie G-Force.

According to the Wisconsin State Journal, a local farmer reported the accident after spotting the car wreckage in a field as he drove past.

"It looks like [Mentell] had been there for several hours. There are a lot of trees in that area, so if you were driving [past], you wouldn’t be able to see the vehicle," Wisconsin's Chief Deputy John Pepper told reporters.

DODGEVILLE, Wis. – An actor who appeared on the TV show "Boston Legal" has been killed in an SUV crash in Wisconsin.

The Iowa County Sheriff's Department says Justin Mentell was killed when his SUV went down an embankment off Highway 39 near Blanchardville and hit two trees.

The crash was reported around 8:30 a.m. Monday.

The sheriff's department says the 27-year-old from Waukegan, Ill., wasn't wearing a seat belt.

Mentell portrayed attorney Garrett Wells on "Boston Legal" from 2005 to 2006. More recently, he was Terrell in the 2009 Disney movie "G-Force."

The Web site says Mentell was a former member of the U.S. Junior National Speedskating team.

A message left with his agent wasn't immediately returned Tuesday.
